Hearing Aids for Teenagers

How common is hearing loss?

32 million children around the world are affected with hearing loss.

Approximately 1.4 to 5 out of every 1000 children are born with hearing loss, while 60% are due to preventable causes.

Childhood hearing loss is often identified during newborn hearing screenings that are performed 24-48 hours after birth. However, some children who pass these screenings show signs of loss, as they grow older.

1.1 billion people between the ages of 12-35 are at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to noise in recreational settings with 12.5% having permanent damage.

The most popular hearing aid for children is a behind-the-ear hearing aid with an added ear mould for comfort and stability.

Resound Up Smart Hearing aids use a unique sound processing strategy: Surround Sound by ReSound. No matter what kind of hearing loss your child has, Resound Up Smart hearing aids deliver the clear, consistent sound that is important for acquiring language and learning skills.

Amazing Hearing Centre is currently offering 20% off for all Resound Up Smart Hearing aids for teenagers from 12 to 18 years old.

Local study links hearing loss to Dementia

local study dementia hearing loss hearing aidA 3 years study conducted by the National University of Singapore and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital have found that hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia. Elderlies (60 years, and above) who suffers from hearing impairment are 2.3 times more likely to develop dementia.

Dr Rebecca Heywood, ENT consultant in the study listed a few theories,

1. For patients with hearing loss, more effort is required to hear degraded sound hence there are less brain resources for thinking and memory.

2. The hearing areas in our brain are involved in memory, hence hearing loss leads to underused and decline in memory function.

3. Difficulty in communication increases risk of social isolation, which is one of the main factors for dementia.

Associate Professor Ng Tze Pin from the department of psychological medicine (NUS) stated that early diagnosis and intervention for hearing loss could potentially delay dementia.

Technologies, such as cochlear implant and hearing aids could help.

Drugs that can cause Hearing Issues

Unknown to most people, one of the common causes of hearing loss are medicine. Ototoxicity is the term health professionals use for medications and supplements that cause hearing loss.

These medications damage the delicate hair cells in the inner ear responsible for hearing and balance in the process, and can lead to temporary or permanent damages. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), there are currently more than 200 medications and chemicals known to cause hearing loss and balance disorders.

Let’s take a look at some of them.

    1. Antibiotics -Ototoxic drugs, e.g. Aminoglycosides, to treat serious infections such as meningitis. Transported into the inner ear which blocks potentially harmful elements in the blood from damaging its delicate hair cells.

    1. Diuretics- Treat edema, glaucoma and high blood pressure. Possibly causes temporary hearing loss and tinnitus.

    1. Chemotherapy drugs, Cisplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy to treat bladder, ovarian, and testicular cancers, side effects includes tinnitus, vertigo to temporary and permanent hearing loss.

  1. Anti-inflammatory drugs, Aspirin, acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). Research found increased risk of hearing loss with regular consumption.

The risk of ototoxicity increases as the drugs accumulates in our body. If you are taking any of the drugs stated above, we recommend a complete hearing assessment and work with your health practitioners to monitor any changes.
